About the Haunt

HISTORY: What began as a small non-profit fundraiser created by Spencer Terry Productions and later directed by Kari Fry, Gateway of Chaos continues to build momentum, once rated Iowa’s #1 scariest haunt for 2 years in a row.

BENEFITING: 100% of the funds raised benefit the Malvern Area Betterment Association (MABA), a non-profit group bettering the social, educational, business and developmental aspects of local people and their city and surrounding areas of Malvern, Iowa.  MABA is made up of over one hundred members and volunteers who are willing to go above and beyond the mission of  ‘connecting people, generating pride and bettering Malvern’s future’.  The directors work closely with a group of East Mills High school, Glenwood High school and other surrounding area students, empowering them to become stronger individuals and community driven volunteers.

VOLUNTEERS: Each year thousands of patrons drive from all over the region to witness what over 50 amazing volunteers create each year.  This year our plans for theme improvements and expansion require two directors: Claire Thalken and Ashley Vogel. 50+ volunteers, plus over $100,000 of investments, produce a haunt now receiving nation-wide attention.  The staff expertise range from business owners, creative costume designers, construction teams, and one of the most highly trained youth acting/theater groups around.  Over the last 9 years, our team averages over 3,000 hours of volunteers service time for this event.  It’s the sure place to find adults, young adults and young children working together unlike any volunteerism opportunity in the region.

EDUCATION: What truly sets us apart is our ownership and empowerment models.  We mentor youth, teach them skills ranging from construction, acting, theater, lighting, psychology and scaring tactics, leadership, creativity, monster makeup,  budgeting, marketing and of course, teamwork.  We’re proud of our curriculum development and collaboration with local schools where some student volunteers can school credit, helping them reach their goals of graduation.
